For casting a hot face try to replace the Portland cement part with plaster – plaster or paris. Add less water, and pack it near semi-dry into a form or hand build. There is a way to slow down plaster hardening – setting, this can be achieved by adding small amount of vinegar in the water you use for mixing the mortar or simply just plaster.

Oct 24, 2015· My first forge was made of plaster, sand, styrofoam. Then I got a brake drum for €10, some sheet metal (door) for free and used that to build an all around superior forge. You can use plaster assuming the outer form of your forge is rigid (mine wasn’t, plaster broke as a result), it will crumble relatively fast at orange heat or above.
